Families spent Labor Day along the Atlantic City boardwalk and beach, capping the holiday weekend in New Jersey before the drive home. Visitors packed the sand, lined up at food stands, and tried their luck at boardwalk games under sunny skies.
The beach drew families from across the Delaware Valley, including Miranda Faroni of Roxborough, who called the day “absolutely beautiful.” Faroni said her family picked up new buckets to build sandcastles. She described rough surf and a current that was “a little scary,” but said it was fun.
Boardwalk crowds enjoy the last hours of summer
Others stuck to the boards. Ruth Stevens Duncker of Williamstown said she came to “enjoy the boards and enjoy the lovely weather.” Visitors grabbed shore staples from food stands and stopped to play games as the holiday wound down.
Many prepared for the trip home and hoped to skip traffic. Van Truong of South Philadelphia said he expected heavy congestion but found it manageable. Aerial images from Chopper 6 showed minor delays on northbound Route 42.
Atlantic City Expressway sees typical holiday flow
Jane Baumgardner of Berwyn said there are “always little jams getting onto the AC Expressway.” She urged patience. “If people just be civil and don’t pass and get there quicker, it makes it better for all of us,” she said.
Some younger travelers took the drive in stride. One boy shrugged off the traffic, saying he did not care about it. Another child announced his plan: “I’m going to take a nap.”
Why the Labor Day crowd matters for Atlantic City
Atlantic City sits on New Jersey’s shore and draws day-trippers and weekend visitors from Philadelphia and the wider Delaware Valley. Labor Day traditionally marks the unofficial end of the summer beach season along the Jersey coast. Route 42 and the Atlantic City Expressway serve as the main arteries carrying holiday traffic home toward Philadelphia and South Jersey.
