ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. , Families from across the Delaware Valley closed out Labor Day on the beaches, boardwalk and attractions of Atlantic City on Monday, packing in one last round of shore fun before the drive home.
For Miranda Faroni of Roxborough, the day delivered exactly what a holiday at the Jersey shore is supposed to.
“It was absolutely beautiful,” Faroni said.
Her crew spent hours in the sand with brand-new buckets for castle-building. The ocean, though, put up a fight.
“The water was very rough and the current was a little scary, but it was fun,” she said.
Not everyone went in the water. Ruth Stevens Duncker of Williamstown was content to stroll the boards and soak up the sunshine.
“Just enjoy the boards and enjoy the lovely weather,” Duncker said.
Visitors worked their way through the usual lineup of shore staples, stopping at food stands for boardwalk favorites and breaking for games along the way.
Heading Home
As the holiday wound down, the focus shifted from sunscreen to seatbelts. Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed only minor congestion on northbound Route 42, and travelers who braced for the worst said they got a break.
“I thought it was going to be really busy for Labor Day, but I feel it’s OK,” said Van Truong of South Philadelphia.
Jane Baumgardner of Berwyn knows the choke points well and offered a plea to fellow drivers heading for the Atlantic City Expressway.
“There’s always little jams getting onto the AC Expressway, but it evens out, and if people just be civil and don’t pass and get there quicker, it makes it better for all of us,” Baumgardner said.
Some of the youngest travelers, meanwhile, had their own approach to the return trip. One boy shrugged off any worry about delays, and another had a simple plan for the ride: a nap.
